15 Aug 2008 - Carb Factors

What is carb factoring?
A carb factor is the percentage of a food that is a carbohydrate.  The most accurate way to count carbohydrates is by using carb factors.  By weighing the food you are about to eat and multiplying it by the amount of the foods carb factor, you can get a precise carb count.

Formula to determine the carb factor of any food
To figure out the carb factor for any prepackaged food, you divide the total carb amount minus the fiber by the weight (in grams) of a single serving.  You then multiply that number by the weight of the serving of food you are eating.  Here is a nutrition lable and example:

nutrition_boxPanel

Take the Total carbs ( 22 ) and subtract the fiber ( 3 ) that give you ( 19 ).  Divide ( 19 ) by the total grams per serving ( 30 ) that gives you 0.63 as your carb factor for this cereal.

So if you weigh out 45 grams for your serving of cereal, you multiply that by the carb factor 0.63.  You will give insulin for 28.35 carbs.
