I just sent this to the editor of Time...

  • Good Morning,
This letter is in reference to a response on your Inbox in your  issue. Reader/responder asks, "Why shoud my allergic son be less important-and less protected in school-than a diabetic child?"

While I agree that any child with a peanut allergy should be very well protected in school, as schools are supposed to be a safe environment for all children, I do take great offense to her comparison of that with a care of a student with diabetes.

If does not have a child with diabetes, then she should not attempt to understand the care that is given-or sometimes not given-to a child with diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a very misunderstood disease, and care from the school staff is not usually not even close to adequete, until the caregiver teaches each and every person that deals with that child on a daily basis. The school year is almost over, and I am still teaching people in my son's school how to handle his diabetes so that he may stay safe in school. The teaching will begin again next September when he starts an entirely different school.

While I feel for plight in keeping her son safe. I would appreciate that she keep other children and their life threatening diseases out of her argument.

  • Another thought,
that mom with the child with the peanut allergy IS allowed to have an epi pen available , possibly with her at all times.
Not so for D-children and glucagon, or  (shudder) gtabs/juice etc. on them at all times or easily accessible.  some have to walk to the office to test when they feel low, not in the classroom etc.

glucagon is often not allowed in the school.

    You go girl!!

  • good job Leslie!! so proud to know you..what a great advocate you are for G and all of our kids.

And speaking of the peanut allergy, I can speak to that.  My youngest Luke has tons of allergies and a severe nut(peanuts especially) allergy.  While I thought the peanut allergy was a HUGE deal....well since d came to out house, I realize how simple that problem is.  Just don't give him peanuts.  He knows to wash his hands alot and wipes off the surface of the table he sits at lunch, before eating.  He can smell nuts incredibly well.  Kind of like a dogs nose.  He is also allergic to soy l, lecithen(which is in carpets)  I give him a antihistamine and that is it.  all of his allergies(except for the nut one) just makes him splotchy and red...he just looks icky and then he takes some benadryl.  we don't even keep a epipen at school.  Vast difference between the 2.  People are just plain stupid

Totally. I just can't stand when people use Type 1 as a comparison when they have no friggin clue. I don't think they'll print it, because I've never seen them print from one reader to the next, but maybe. I feel better I wrote it.

  • I agree w/you.  I don't think people should be comparing and rating which one is worst than the other.

They should just leave T1 out of their fight....

good for you writing the letter...
