I am having to file for FMLA at work...

  • after last weeks episode of Rylee having HIGH bs and large ketones and my office told me that was not a very convenient day for me to be off of work.  WTH - well it wasn't very convenient for me either but my kid comes first.

Things are bad at work and they typically always understand but I feel like I need to do it just to make sure I am protected.  I still have over 2 weeks of vacation left so it's not like I'm going over or anything.  Dennis already uses FMLA so he can take off when necessary.

This is just frustrating since I already have so much to deal with.  I am meeting with HR tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.

  • I am really sorry that they are giving you such a hard time at work. I have had FMLA since Courtney was diagnosed and get it renewed every year. I have never had to use a single day of it as I just use my vacation time but it is there in case I go thru all of my vacation time and need it-have to keep my job.

  • Does this mean they don't have to pay you if you take off work and it's classified as an FMLA day?

I'm sorry you have this hassle Mel.  It's not like we ask for our kids to get sick!  <hug> <hug>

No you still get paid as long as you have the time to take off.  They just cannot hold it against you and you can't lose your position when you take off for anything related to what your FMLA is for.   Basically, they cannot retaliate against you for taking off on days which are not convenient for them.  It is 100% to support the employee!  Also, if I needed to with FMLA, I could take off up to 12 weeks of unpaid time if I had to and they couldn't fire me.  Which I of course don't plan on doing!

I'm about to leave to go across campus to HR for the meeting so we shall see how it goes.

  • Do you feel they are being unsupportive or just aggravated that you were out on a day that was probably a crazy one.

Either way I'm glad you are thinking about this and protecting yourself.  Bummer bummer bummer.

  • FMLA is a good thing to have I only have 1 more vacation day left this year, and it was all spent for Amy on dr's appoints and sick days. Now I just need to convince her to only be sick on my days off. Then I will have use the FMLA stuff or hope for people to trade days around with me........

Hopefully it all goes good for you, good luck.
