  • Just curious what you are all doing.  I pretty much had my mind made up and was against it until I called my CDE this morning.  Idk what to do.

  • I'm undecided bc it's a new vaccine, so you don't have much report of its benefits or contraindications, etc.

  • what did the cde say?
She basically said that they are recommending it bc even though our kids are "healthy" they have a much higher risk of complications from the flu.  As far as they know at this time, all of the kids who contracted it were very healthy, no diseases, allergies, etc.  And they have had major complications.  So if our children were to contract it, they are very fearful of what those complications would be.  One of the major problems is dehydration with this strain and she said their is much higher risk for DKA with this than any other flu or illness.

Idk, she is getting it and so is her son who has T1.  She told me it is totally up to me and she understands why I am kind of against it.  But she feels that the pros outweigh the cons for our kids.

  • the vaccine creation is the same method of the seasonal flu vaccine we get.  what is not being publicized is that the seasonal one is made in the same "rush" process... they only have x amount of time to guess which strands may be out there

I hate media hype for anything

True but it is based on the prior years vaccine.  This one was just "whipped" up on a whim.

  • I am thinking yes... but that is realy based on the fact, as yo uall know, that when Emily gets sick... she gets really sick!  I don't think we can take the chance not getting it...  :-\

  • When we go back to the doctor and discuss it I may change my mind but for now I responded "no" in the poll and really don't intend to get either flu vaccine this year for Skylar.

I go back and forth every year with the regular flu vaccine. However, since we home educate, I do have more options of keeping my girls out of the public and not expose us to nearly as much so most times I'm very comfortable not getting flu vaccines.

  • I voted no but with a trip in the plans I might rethink that.  I spoke with the nurse about it and she didn't think it was necessary here (small town, only 2 mild cases in older adults last year and we homeschool) but we hadn't booked our trip then.  I'd hate for them to get any serious illness while we're out of the country if I might have been able to prevent it.

  • I'm still on the fence about it.  Ped says yes, but I want to talk to all his specialists first.

Slight threadjack; where are you going on your trip Rudi?

  • I just don't know.  One of the girls at work has been reading about it and said that it has twice the amount of an ingredient that can cause Guillain Barre syndrome than the regular flu vaccine.  That scares me, but most of the doctors I work with say get it.  We had a patient last week with it.  After she delivered her baby we sent her to the ICU.  She is still there and on a vent.  The doctors are afraid she won't survive.  That really scares me!  We go to the endo Oct. 16th.  I'll probably do whatever they suggest.
