  • Good luck w/ after school care. It's not an easy one bc district only do what is necessary for learning hrs only. Everything else is optional.

Try to talk to the ASC manager to see if that person can help you. I was told the same thing till I talk to him. He was even very mad and was asking for the person who said they couldn't take anybody w/ DT1. If he says no, talked to the principal. If you say he is a nice person, I'm sure they can help you there.

    Good luck!!!

Actually, they haven't denied him, they just told me they can't give insulin or check him, which is fine with me, but I am trying to help another parent out who's child is being denied completely.

And, they cannot deny him, they have to accomadate him, they are using a public school to facilitate there service, the ADA says that is discrimination if they don't take him. There are many children with D in after school care.  Our Dr. told me too that they can't deny him after care at the school

  • Drs and day care say they can't but they do bc district and region support them. It's a nasty battle. I saw on TV "Help me Howard" one similar case where the child need shots. Unfortunately for the child and the family, there were nothing they could do by law. Just for ASC. But of course, after being on TV, they "try" to help and do their best. So, they accept the child.

But it all depends on the principal and ASC manager. If he/she is a nice person and willing to help, they will learn and they will do it. BTDT.

    Here ya go Linds -

What if my school refuses to cooperate with my requests?
If your school denies you a 504 plan, or tells you that it is not neccessary, remember that your child has the right to receive one. Crystal Jackson is the American Diabetes Association's Manager of Legal Advocacy. She can help you determine the appropriate steps to take in resolving this issue. She can be reached at (888) 342-2382 Ext. 2108. You may have to leave a message, but she will get back to you.

Every parent on this board should have this number! It is listed under T1P resources, 504 FAQs. In the school section.
