  • My daughter has had T1 for 4 years now.  She is now 6 years old and she just had her first hospital admission with a stomach virus and large ketones.  She has been eating all day with no bolusing.  I wanted to post dose, because I wasn't sure what she was actually up to eating.  She has eaten about 120 - 150 carbs for free throughout the day.  Can a stomach virus re- trigger a honeymoon?  So confused

  • My son had a tummy bug a couple of months ago.  He had wicked lows a couple of days after, and we ended up not bolusing for meals for 6 days, and half bolus a couple more days. We also had to reduce Lantus, and we just increased it again this week.  It is very confusing.

  • Thank you so much.  I just put her insulin pump on a temporary basal.  I halved it, I hope that's enough.

  • It is my understanding that there are absorption issues after a stomach bug and many of the carbs eaten don't get absorbed. I have not experienced it and there may be more to the story, but that's what I've read. Just guessing, but maybe another factor could be the liver is releasing less or no glucose right now. If the liver is involved in the process of clearing the body of the virus, it could stop glucose production. Or maybe it used up all of its glucose stores when she wasn't keeping anything down. Just theory....

I'm glad your daughter is doing better.

  • Oh the tummy bug! We decreased basal by 50% and she ate for free pretty much for almost a week afterwards! She had low to moderate ketones though because she wasn't getting enough insulin. I was okay with them being that low.

    Welcome to the board!

Was it just me or did it feel good for her to go uncovered? And stay in range!

I was too busy second guessing myself to enjoy it.   :-\

  • Thank you so much everyone!  New to this site, love it! I have to say it is nice not dosing insulin, but it toys with your mind.  I keep thinking  a miracle happened!  ;D

  • Poor baby sickness + ketones to end up in the hospital is no fun.  But sometimes that's the best place for them to be.  And that is ok, sometimes we just have to raise the white flag and get the additional help <hug>

When Annelies has a tummy bug and it messes with absorption, I've been known to not bolus the carbs and later test and correct at the 2 hour mark, if needed.  As the correction needs start to increase then I'll start adding a bit of a food bolus until she's back to "normal"

  • This bug came on so quickly.  She was vomiting and her sugar dropped so fast.  I couldn't get any carbs in her without them coming right back up.  I called Children's hospital and they said to come right in.  Someone needed to drive and someone needed to sit with her and the glucagon shot.  So scary!  She was vomiting every 15-30 min.  When we got there, they gave her zofran to stop the vomiting.  This is the first time she's had a tummy thing since diagnosis, 4 years ago.  We're lucky that we went so long without a stomach virus.  Now I'd like to put her in a bubble  :)

  • Ask your endo for a zofran scrip to keep at home.

OMG, that would be SO scary.  I don't know what I'd have done.  My husband works an hour away.  Neighbors are at work during the day.  I guess it would have been an ambulance ride!  Wow.  Scary to think about!  So glad it turned out well for you.  <hug>
