Problem with Pump Site Coming Off

  • My 4 year old has been t1 for 2 years now and he just started on the pump 5 months ago. Last week we had our first hiccup he took his site off in the middle of the night woke up with a bgl of 600+ and large ketones. He was throwing up and couldnt keep fluids down so we took him to the hospital and luckily he was not in dka yet just borderline but it scared the crap out of me. In the 2 years he's had type 1 nothing like this has ever happened we do a pretty good job with managing it. Last night his site came off again in his sleep luckily since I've been watching him like a hawk and checking on him every couple hours to make sure it doesn't happen again we caught it. I'm getting exhausted though not being able to sleep, does anyone else have this problem and found a good way to deal with it? We did talk to him about how important it was and he agreed he doesnt want to go back to the hospital but last night he didn't even realize it had happened, I'm guessing it has to do with it being summer and the sweating and swimming, that makes it easier to come off. Any suggestions on how to make sure it stays on?

  • What kind of pump is he using?

During the summer it is sometimes hard for us to keep sites on, especially if she's a bit sweaty... it slides right off.  With her minimed pump (which she is using now) we add skintac and then IV3000 over it (tegaderm is like IV3000... it's the stuff they use over iv sites).  When she was wearing Omnipod, we'd use just skin tac.

  • We use either Tegaderm - Nexcare makes these and I can sometimes find them near the other adhesive bandages - or lately we've been getting the Infusion Set IV3000 tape directly from Minimed when we order pump supplies.  The tape isn't covered by our insurance, but it sure beats changing sites more often than we need!

  • I use skin tac swabs before appyling it, then swab the top of the site as well and finish it with flexi opsite tape.  It with stands the water and sweat.

  • Where do you get the skin-tac?  Over the counter?  I am starting to have trouble with my sites (pump and CGM) staying on when I sweat.  And it was HOT this past weekend...

  • I changed Chris' site on Saturday.  After two hours he sweat so much the part where the connectors meet had come off his back.  I just put a big bandaid on it.

  • We bought the bottle from there but I'm not seeing it now... it has lasted forever.  I think I'll order some wipes, they'll travel easier.

I don't think so, but they are cheap I got 50 wipes for like $12.  I got mine from American Diabetes Wholesale.

Tori's does but she has Children's Special Health with our BCBS so I don't know which part covers them.

Tori's does but she has Children's Special Health with our BCBS so I don't know which part covers them.

I was going to say this too.  Our insurance (also BCBS) covers them.
Theresa, in order for Children's Special Health to cover them, they have to be a covered expense on the primary insurance.  If primary doesn't cover, then Children's won't either.
