Agreed!  Different than the Artificial Pancreas and IMO a better fit/product.

I've heard the terms used interchangeably- I wasn't aware that one was a specific product and another was a different product.  I thought JDRF used to use the term Artificial Pancreas and had recently moved to calling it the Bionic Pancreas.

  • Biggest difference IMO is that the bionic contains both insulin and glucogon.  There also is what I perceive to be a more intricate algorithm which takes more bio feedback into consideration when making dosing decisions than just bg.  I don't remember specifics, but the BP in practice was able to more closely match need when the person indicated a level of carb intake (on a scale or 1-5?  1-10?  I don't remember).  I don't believe that it was necessary for every meal, but that the BP learned what type of eater you are and if you ate significantly differently, then you let it know.  From the presentation that I heard, it seemed a much more intuitive device and a more balanced approach.

They of course would like to include a faster insulin which would make it even better, but that would make pumping and MDI better as well.

I don't know about JDRF changing there terminology.  At the conference I attended there was a presentation on both the AP and the BP.  Different devices, different groups developing it.

  • Interesting!  I had heard the AP apply to several different devices (device combinations...)
