Strep throat - Can't swallow

  • Parker is sick. Spent the weekend in the hospital and came home yesterday. He's not drinking anything since being home and says he feels worse than when there. He will NOT swallow - not even his spit and what little he has swallowed has been thrown up. BG is dropping ... ideas? I'm almost convinced to take him back to hospital now, but if possible to avoid would like to.

    Thank you!

  • Awww, poor baby!  :'(

If he can't or won't swallow, he'll get dehydrated fast.  And BG dropping is concerning too.
It sounds to me like he needs to go back to the hospital for IV fluids and probably some pain meds too.
I'd give your doc (either GP or ENT or whoever treated him in hospital) a call and see if they can get the process started, so you don't sit in the ER for hours.

    Good luck!  <hug>

  • Agree with the other ladies, If he can't swallow i'd head back to the ER. The other option if you really don't want to go back is to give mini glucagon injections if he goes low.

  • Poor baby!  When did he start antibiotics?  I'd think he should be feeling better by now.  If he won't/can't swallow I don't know much other option.  Maybe something cold like an icee?

  • Sorry all - we ended up in the hospital and things just kept getting worse. He's on the upswing now and acting more like his normal self. Sucky to have have to deal with, but glad my boy is back to feeling good!
