What is going on?

  • Very frustrating last couple of days.  Chris really enjoys eating these set of four mini frozen muffins for breakfast each day.  He usually also eats a couple of other things with it.  Well they don't have the best effect on his BG, but honestly not that much different from other breakfast foods.   Anyway, the past several days when he eats them he's been spiking to the mid to high 500s.  It also doesn't seem to matter what he starts at.  Could be under 100 or in the 200s and he ends up in the same place.

It's absolutely crazy and it's driving me nuts.  Besides obviously not being good for him, his behavior is out of control and it can take several hours to get down even with additional basal. This is in comparison to Friday thought when he was at school and more active and dropped about 500 points from morning snack to lunch (930 to 12).    I don't want to take food choices away from him, but what the heck?   Does an extended bolus work on something like muffins?

  • Are you pre bolusing?  What's the carb count?  Is it higher than other breakfast foods?

Breakfast is one thing I had no hope of controlling without dex (ha.  Controlling... getting a handle on might be more accurate- control is not possible with D  ;) )

  • Lexi is the same way with the little frozen sausage biscuits... SO I started double bolusing for them and it's much much much better!

  • it can take several hours to get down even with additional basal.

A basal change (permanent or temp) will take about 2 hours to see an effect on bg.  That is why you want to change a basal 2 hours prior to when you are seeing a problem in basal rates.  The best/fastest way to bring down a high is with a correction bolus.

I need to be brave and try this with the pancake/sausage on a stick that Kayleigh loves.
