Bolus for Watermelon?

  • So we used the code on the scale and the bowlful came out to 34 carbs...now I'm second guessing giving her insulin for it.

    What's your watermelon experience?

  • One of my boys always eats way more watermelon then I had anticipated, so I usually dose him high for it. ;)

My mom (type 2) has noticed that it's bad for her BGs.

  • We barely dose for watermelon. It's not quite free, but it's honestly pretty close for small amounts. I have .06 as a watermelon carb factor, so only 6% carb. Either that was a BIG bowl, she didn't remove the rind (my carb factor is without rind), or that seems off to me.

  • I had cut the rind off... I think we got off ok because spaghetti was for dinner...so if there had been an issue it was balanced by that.

  • It's mostly free for us. If he eats an enormous amount I'll just give some insulin. I never weigh it anymore.

Yeah, I should say that I never bother to weigh it anymore either. Just add a couple carbs for a pile if it seems particularly large.

I'm guessing, like you did, that the spaghetti evened out. I just can't imagine not going low after giving that much insulin for watermelon, but as always, YDMV.  :loco:

  • Was that with the rind? We bolus for watermelon and it's rarely above 10 carbs. We do .06 carbs per gram. That's without the rind.

  • No rind, she had a heaping bowl full. Normally she has it when we're out, and not too much so we don't add it in. But we bought one at the farmers market

We have left overs, maybe will experiment at breakfast tomorrow, if they don't finish it tonight
