What is going on?

  • The last two days have been scary and frustrating.  Chris' buskin needs are way down.   Today he only used 8 units, most of which is basal.   Most meals he didn't get insulin for.   Yesterday, 1.5 hours after morning snack he was 43.  Today, 2 hours after lunch, he was 35!   These are both usually high points for him.  Meaning like two or three hundreds.   I checked his pump settings because I was literally giving him no meal insulin today and was nervous hat something got changed some how.   Nope.  All ok.    And to boot, tonight it a site change night, so my nerves are really on edge.  I usually have to do  a 30% reduced basal and 20 or 30 something uncovered carbs on site change nights.  Ugh.   Any ideas on what could be going on?

  • Any signs of a GI illness? Often times the lows are a first sign of GI illness here .  Carbs aren't absorbed right when GI is off .  There use maybe change in weather , routine ?

  • He had diarrhea a couple of weeks back, but no low blood sugars since that happened.  Just disconnected the pump. 95 blood sugar and fast asleep.  Gotta get something in him.   Ugh.  Gonna be a long night.   Hoping nothing GI is coming.

  • Another vote for a tummy bug. I put a bowl or bucket near their bed when that starts  happening because it almost always is followed by vomiting in our house. I'll be praying for better things for you!

  • No bug and insulin needs still crazy reduced.   TDD is like 8 or 9 units vs his normal 11 to 13.   He is mostly receiving basal insulin right now.   And when he does get a bolus, he almost for sure goes low.

  • Any suggestions on changes?

    130am - 114 -4oz milk
    505am - 76 - 7oz milk
    740am - 156 - 1/2 cup strawberries, 3oz banana,2 mini pancakes
    1050am - 128
    1120am - 68 - juice box, nuggets, Cheerios
    141pm - 185 - 1.5 servings teddy Graham's
    316pm - 312 - French fries
    523pm - 46 - 2 glucose tabs and container of blackberries
    641pm - 114 - nuggets again, 4oz apples

Only bolus today was for the French fries at 316, otherwise only got basal We've never had his insulin needs reduced this much, I don't even recall it for this many days after a tummy bug.   Will call endo tomorrow and we have our quarterly visit on Wednesday.   Oh, and as much as I love seeing all these numbers in the 100s, because they're never like this, I can't wait for things to go back to normal so I'm not constantly worrying about how low he might go!

  • Just had a thought, tell me if this sounds crazy.   I just realized that te timing of the insulin needs was a couple of days In from when I stopped giving Chris his maintenance inhaler for asthma, the first time he's successfully been off it in 1.5 years or more.  Could there be any relation there?

  • Yes. That makes perfect sense. In that case, it is probably going to be your new normal, i.e. where you would have been without the inhaler all this time.

  • Ok glad I'm not crazy.  But it's so weird, I don't remember it being that drastic when he went in the medicine or went to the higher dose!

    Totally. Isn't the inhaler steroid?
