carb counting question

  • When counting carbs on a nutrition label, do you subtract fiber?

I never have, but my husband thinks we should.  The other night we had burritos (a weekly meal in our house).  I buy the carb balance tortillas which have 19 carbs.  He occasionally goes low afterwards, but usually not.  If I subtract the fiber, it is 6g carbs for the tortilla.  I'm afraid if I do this, he will be rather high after meals. If I do start subtracting the fiber, will I need to adjust his I:C?

  • The dietitian at our endo's office says to subtract half the fiber if it's 5 or more grams per serving. (I wish our diet was healthy enough to actually make use of this rule  <roflmao>).

Fiber is not absorbed into the bloodstream, so thats why it's subtracted without affecting I:C ratio.

  • We do not subtract fiber as a rule.  But as mentioned, you don't subtract it all.

We do have some things we just don't cover (avocado and beans both come to mind)

This is what we were taught too, but we never do.

  • We were also taught the "if over 5 subtract half" but then our dietician went to a conference and they changed it to "if over 8 subtract half" so it's never been something we've put anymore thought into nor do we do it

  • We were taught that we could subtract half over 5 g as well, but we don't.  If it were an issue, then we would.

  • We don't subtract it either.  We asked the endo about this a couple of years ago, and he said it didn't seem to work for people unless they were eating a very high fiber diet.  He offered the subtract half if more than 5-8 grams of fiber per serving, but he said to only do so if we were seeing lows dosing regularly.

  • We do not subtract.  We were told not to.

It has not been a problem.  Other than beans we probably don't eat anything super high fiber though.  I wish. Beans have not presented a problem but are generally not eaten alone so maybe that is why.

  • When we used to eat some of those high carb tortillas and things like that, we would subtract fiber, because it made a huge difference for the boys. (I no longer buy those because of gastro issues relating to high inulin content.) We still subtract it for fresh fruit and veg that are high in fiber, like apples.

For what it's worth, with beans, we have to combo bolus them over 1-2 hours and correct after 3-4 hours.

  • we do not subtract fiber. I tried once and she ran high afterwards. Shortly after diagnosis i actually asked her endocrinologist about this, and he said to use total carbs and to not subtract fiber.  But then we don't normally eat anything with more than 2-3 carbs of fiber.

  • Thanks everyone. I think I'll just keep counting all the carbs and just make adjustments if I notice problems.
