Advice for toddler DX

  • Talked to a local gal on the phone yesterday whose 13-month-old daughter was DX a couple weeks ago (a mutual friend hooked us up). I felt like I was of limited help to her, because I never had a D-toddler.

This mom is really on top of it and already starting to question how she can give her daughter better care rather than just blindly follow the dosing framework they were given at discharge. The little girl is on a split dose of Lantus, with one unit of Humalog given after breakfast, lunch, and dinner. No carb counting, no food restrictions; a call to the doctor for an additional dose amount if BG is above a certain threshold. The mom is noticing that sometimes one unit isn't enough and sometimes it drops her too much. They do have a follow up appointment with a dietician this week, and I assume the plan will change as they get more education and experience. I was unsure how to fit my "D kids can eat anything and you shouldn't need big dietary changes" philosophy into an inflexible dosing schedule.

Obviously they're following closely with the peds endo, but any general advice from those who've been down this road? I'm going to connect her with another local T1 mom whose daughter was DX at 18 months.

  • Campbell was 9 at dx, so I'm no help, but I posted on FB to ask those with experience to come over here.

  • Kaelyn was 2 1/2 at diagnosis, but that is still really different than 13 months. We were never on a restrictive plan either. Don't feel like I am much help with this one.

  • I know there's a diapers and diabetes group on FB, maybe that would be helpful?

Thank you! I offered, but she's on information overload right now (we've all been there). If she feels ready to connect later, I'll message you.  <t-up>
