  • Please help us with this crazy trend we started. This is 3 weeks of very low numbers.  I have called the doc. Office with no help other than juice and lowering basals which I have done.  Truly this is ridiculous and scary. I wonder if she has an underlying issue. The Doc never returned my call and the nurse is no help at this point saying to come in next week.  Great.  Today is actually better because yesterday she had a 35 in the early afternoon. She hasnít been coming up from juice at school and when she gets home she spikes.

    She is 12

    12am  BG 356   Basal .8    1 unit correction
    3am    BG 216   Basal .8    1 unit correction
    6am    BG 180   Basal .8    1.35 units 20 carbs
9:50    BG 69     Basal  .575  15 carbs juice   *at school yes she should have waited 5 minutes but panicked
    10:00  BG 69     Basal  .6    16 carbs glucose tabs
    10:15  BG 69     Basal  .6    15 carbs juice
    10:30  BG 69     Basal  .6    15 carbs juice
    10:45  BG 69     Basal  .6    16 carbs glucose tabs
11:00  BG 69     Basal  .6    8  carbs glucose tabs * went and picked her up from school
12:35  BG 70     Basal  .5   81 carbs lunch 2 units insulin after eating
    1pm    BG 24     Basal  .5   15 carbs juice  *unplug
1:15    BG 514   Basal  .5   15 carbs juice  ketones moderate
    1:22    BG 66     Basal  .5   8 glucose tabs
2:00 BG HIGH Basal  .5   *plug back in
    2:30 BG 520    Basal  .5
    3:00 BG 564     Basal  .5   2units (pump wanted 7)
    3:26 BG 261 Basal  .5
    3:51  BG 48  Basal  .5   15g juice
    4:15 BG  80 basal .5
4:30  BG 43  Basal  .5   8g tabs  *ketones moderate to large

    and here we go again
    4:45   BG 54 8g tabs
5:00   BG  554   Awesomeness. going to wait to see if it drops again on its own
    5:40   BG  132 WTF?
    6:00    BG   157
6:40    BG   543  she hasn't eaten anything and nothing but basals.

  • Have you tried another meter? To be sure that these numbers are true values?

And if so, I'm thinking there is a liver dump going on with these low lows and high highs.

  • I'll have to look up how a liver dump works. We replaced all her school meters because I am thinking a lot of those numbers were wrong in the past few weeks. However. Today I am using a brand new mini, checked to make sure her ping meter is correct w tester fluid and am using both meters each test. Not fun

    and thank  you for replying

  • Okay- the 1:15bg was wrong.  No question.  Simply not possible to go from 24 to 514 in 15 min.  Also the 5:00bg has to be wrong.

BUT I'm thinking you're seeing meter error here.  A lot of those values are too wonky.  I would try a different meter with different strips.

For now I would double test on 2 different meters for every stick.  Something is very off there.

Yeah, I agree.  I just cant fathom a swing from 24 to 514 to 66 within 22 minutes.  Is she feeling these lows?  It almost looks to me like it's the lows that are false.  It would not surprise me at all if the continual treatments for the 69s resulted in 514 at 1:15 and then high by 2pm.

  • Swings that fast just aren't physically possible.  There is a limit to how fast bg can change.

  • We are now using a 4rth brand new meter and this one seems to be giving numbers that actually make sense. I guess we have to call animas and get a new meter for the ping. I can't believe that allllll the other meters even the new ones out of the box are sooooooooo wrong. I swear this has been so stressful. Now to monitor her bgs hopefully correctly to re adjust all the adjustments!  Where the hell is the emoji of the guy hitting his head on the wall?

  • Yeah.  Wonky meters are a fear of mine.  Could it have been the strips?  We've had bad strips before- mad making.

  • Is she very active and/or play sports? If they were true lows, when it was being stubborn, could explain maybe.

  • Thank you for your replies. I'm going to look at the lot number of the strips used today and get those replaced and use others.

Andrea, usually she is very active but w the weird numbers I made her rest all day.

The nurse on the phone wouldn't listen to us about her numbers and was on the phone w us after daughter tested and was 24. I told the nurse she doesn't look and act low. She wanted us to do low dose glucagon and I told her just wait a minute  because I knew the next number would be a rebound. If she had looked low, acted low, felt bad I would have considered it but really felt something else is wrong.

Maybe I'm wrong but injecting glucagon into an awake person when they are showing no signs seems so bad. My daughter wasn't having it.

  • Glad you're getting good help here (if not from the doctor's office, sheesh), and it sounds like you're following your mama-instinct.  <t-up> No advice from me but  <hug> for the frustration!

Angela, I think I know what you meant but could you elaborate a bit on "liver dump"?
