Growing Up
« on: July 28, 2015, 03:13:26 PM »
Just want to share with you all how Kristen is doing with diabetes.  She is rocking it right now and I'm so proud.  I know it may not be like this forever...so I'm celebrating!

We've been doing this eight years now, Kristen was diagnosed the summer between kindergarten and 1st grade;  She will be starting her freshman year this August!

This summer, she is growing up and managing her diabetes pretty good.  Not great, but passable.  And as far as I'm concerned, passable is way better than not great.

She went to Tennessee with my best friend's church youth group for a conference.  NO CGM with Share because of a mixup that I made.  She wore a transmitter that was a dud.  She did pretty good.  Ran higher than I would like, but pump records show she checked, bolused, & corrected at appropriate times.

This past week she is at band camp.  She is there from 8 to 4 every day.  She is managing lows, asking for advice, and then taking the advice from me and doing it or deciding to do something different.  One day my advice failed miserably,  the next day she chose to do something else and she tanked, but the next she chose to do things differently without consulting me and she succeeded.  She is learning, slowly but surely and it is awesome to see.  Today, she dropped low and we were texting and I gave her a suggestion and she took it upon herself to go and talk to the band director to find out how active the rest of the day was going to be so she could adjust insulin and carbs.  She then took the information the band director gave her and made a plan.  Proud mom moment that she even thought to ask the question.

In February, she is heading to Disney World for a band trip.  Right now I don't know if a nurse is going (I can't) and I truly believe she will do just fine, this summer she has shown that she can.

I am finally starting to see the fruits of my teaching and labor.  She still doesn't take initiative on site changes or insulin changes, BUT she is doing all the other stuff and letting me handle it when she doesn't want to.  (She still passes me her meter at the dinner table and wants me to do insulin for dinner).  She is so good at knowing when she needs that break and when she can handle it.

I need to do a better job of letting her take control.  When she says, "I've got this."  She really does.  But I also need to remember to take it from her when she asks/wants me to.

Our endo says that it is our jobs to make them their own best caretaker.  Sounds like you've done that really well!
