Update 3 (hope last): Love/Hate Soccer

  • Bottom line is she's having fun...I keep, reminding myself that

Day 1..morning practice, has a yogurt pouch before hand...bad idea, dairy is a no go now...made her stomach hurt...then she ended practice in the 300s...came home, corrected.  That was mistake 2.  It crashed her into stubborn lows...we way over corrected...then during practice number two it all hit and she spiked HI

Day 2...wakes up 137...woo hoo! Try a protein bar 22g uncovered for morning practice. Finished a little high (so maybe half a bar next time)...no bgl drama...goes to practice at 95 right arrow...has 2 juices and then a couple smarties packs to keep her up-ish...finished at 170

Then she says the asst coach wants her and the other t1 to keep food logs for the next 3 days so god he can help them get their bgl under control.  My initial reaction is hell no.  sure he's studying sports medicine if something like that but I need to pick your brain over this.

Annelies doesn't want to make it a big deal...promising her I won't...Allen is going to chat with him...but what would you do?

  • How did the other T1 react? Any chance you've met her parents yet and could talk to them? Here's the thing - and you know cause you've been through this with one kid just not a t1 kid. She's in high school now. This is when we slowly step back and let them make the calls. If she's ok with doing the logs then I'd let her. If she's not then see if she's open to talking to the coach or if she and the other t1 can be on the same page I'd go that route. If you guys don't want to do the logs it's a simple conversation of "that's really not how we do it but we appreciate you looking out for her." It's a tough one. I'd let Annelies guide you on how she wants to handle it.

  • It sounds like day 2 went pretty well.

We found with fencing it was very much trial and error.  We also found that training and competition were completely different.

I would not be comfortable turning a food log in to the assistant coach.  T1's deal with enough judgment about food, this just seems to set up that opportunity. You & Annelies are the experts on T1D, the coach is not.

  • Ugh. Why can't they just stay little?

The only thing I don't love about this is the use of the word control. I'm okay with the logs as long as they are ok with Annalies, and they will not be used for any judgement at ALL!!

And as far as control, we all know that she can eat the same freaking thing every day and it might not make a difference.

So I think if A is okay with it, and she does not feel bullied or attacked because of her logs then I'd be okay with trying it.

  • Oh the other T1 has been honeymooning for years and sees the same endo as us...when I tried to talk to her she says something about maybe sharing orange duty because her daughter needs them during games...

I think he should stay in his lane...soccer coach...but I could just be over reacting...

  • I would have a very strong opinion if it was GOD 😅 but we knew what you meant. Ok, I think if part of his coaching style is to work on sports nutrition for best performance on the field, then Ok, but it applies to the entire team.  Obviously, that's not the case. i can not see this ending well for Annalies if she gives the logs

  • Another vote to follow her lead. How does she feel about logging? If she wants to do it he gets one chance to respond appropriately. If she doesn't want to then a low key no thanks.

  • Personally, I wouldnt be comfortable handing any of that info over to the coach.  The fact that he feels that by keeping a log and reviewing it that he can somehow help them gain "control" irks me.

Tennis threw us for a BG loop too.  It is still tough to figure out. I give him yogurt and graham crackers (or crackers with ham and cheese) uncovered and it seems to be the best for him.

  • Jason's thoughts: #1, what are his qualifications that he thinks he can help?
#2, knock yourself out if you have all this extra time to try to "fix" it.
#3, maybe he is trying to learn.

If he's trying to learn,  and A is ok with it, then fine. I'm sure he has no idea how much trial and error is involved. Otherwise,  he needs to stay in his own lane.
