I ride for you...

  • For the new mom who spews out question after question till the only one that remains is "Am I to blame?"
And all the carb counting, finger poking  "advocate and educate" moms who reassure her she is not.

For the runner on the ground, the player on the bench and the student home from school
And to the ones crossing the line, scoring the goals, and learning life's lessons ahead of their time

for the girl  looking in the mirror hoping to hide that which should be worn as a badge of courage
..And for her date who notices her beauty and grace, and not her attachments.

For the one who would give almost anything to be a grandma...
Except to sacrifice being a mom.
And to the grandmas that refuse to let needles and numbers stand in the way of building memories.

For the dad who reads charts and studies trends like his very life depends on it
    (Because, in truth, it does.)
Where the answer to x involves the ever fickle D, allowing one to sometimes understand, but never solve the equation

For the exhausted ones so tired of the vigil that they see what should be life sustaining insulin as a way to finally set their burden down
And for those that choose to survive, wake from those dark nights and relearn to thrive.

For my grandchild and yours, that they revel in the stories and carry on the memories
But live lives free of T1D and never see blue candles lighting up the night.
And For the families of the Jessies and the Kycies and those that sing out on mile 23
when we with voices go silent and open our hearts wide enough to hear them.

For those who've waited the promised seven years, three and four times over
Who are fed up and filled up with big business propaganda conspiracies and say this is forever
And for the sneaker bearers, the runners, the givers and fellow riders
Who are willing to go the distance, seven times seven more.
Because we know that at the end of this journey there is a CURE!

For my son the navigator of the peaks and valleys of this narrow path of health, pursuer and protector of his joys, his passions and his life
And for his sister, who knows the panic of the unanswered phone call, ever willing to stand by his side, and pick up his sword.

For those with highs and those with lows.
    And those that love them.

    I ride for YOU!

  • a little explanation...
On our name tags for this weekend was a line that said " I ride for -------".
I used to just write in my sons name but 6 years in I've come to know and love so many more people who's lives have been affected by this disease.  I ended up just putting an asterisk on the line and stayed up to write this list to put in my bike pack.  Please know that this amazing group was forefront on my mind as we pedaled through the heat.  I hesitate to share this list as the ride is truly a celebration of beating T1d But hope you all understand that I don't mean to focus on the struggles, just feel to truly appreciate the victory you need to acknowledge all that has been lost in the battle.

A little explanation to mile 23... This is the mile we rode in silence for all those who are no longer with us.  This year anyone who chose to could write a name or message on the sign.  Despite the high temps I had goosebumps during that mile.
