You're going to think I'm crazy

  • I know there are many of you deep in the trenches of battling d daily.  I miss it.  I don't miss the frustration and the sleep deprivation.  But I miss the knowing and "control" part of it.

I miss knowing what the bg numbers are.  I miss knowing when the last site change was.  I miss being in control of scheduling the site changes.  I miss having a schedule for ordering insulin and supplies.  I actually do miss the analysis of numbers.  I miss knowing what food was going in, what insulin was given, what the result was.

I'm out of the loop.  It's really hard being on the outside and hoping for the best.  Also knowing that the best is not happening and being powerless to change it.  I asked him the other day how he would feel if it was his girlfriend who had d and she was taking care of it like he is taking care of his.  (He has done better in the few days since then.  >:D)

Not sure what the point is of this post.  I do empathize with those of you still in the trenches.  It's a hard life.  It takes it's toll.  Just remember to take some time to enjoy the positives of being the one to make the decisions and be in control.  Letting go is hard....

  • We just dropped Matthew off at college last Saturday.  The letting go part is slowly sinking in.  And I have so far resisted the urge to ask him about blood sugars!  The only D related "conversation" we had was a text message from him asking if we packed the Tegaderm tape for his pump sites.  So at least I can assume he did a site change?

  • Dropping Cole off at CSM on Friday....and even  though I feel like he's been in control of his care for awhile I do think the not knowing part will be very hard!   As his endo said our job was to prepare him to be his own best care provider...hoping we did that well.

  • Thank you, Michelle. I think about this a lot in every aspecting of parenting, including D. I think elementary age is the sweet spot.  ;)

  • I completely understand this and I'm not even there yet. Parenting shapes us as to who we are, diabetes parenting consumes us even if we don't make it all consuming...without diabetes we are still left finding out who we are as parents, most parents only have one hurdle to overcome at college, empty nest, we are diabetes parents have so much more.
     <hug> to you.
