Student pumping

  • The nurse at my school came up to me today. Evidently there is a new student at my school with a pump. He's new to the school but in 5th grade. There were no orders or anything bout his pump and the nurse is clueless. Mom speaks Spanish only so there is a communication problem as well.

Kudos to my nurse for finding help (me) when it wasn't provided for her. But yikes! Not sure id drop my kid off at a new school without health orders for diabetes. Unless I am thinking from the nutty parent perspective??

Anyway, she's not sure what pump it is. I told her if it wasn't the one I use, I had access to info bout all of them, thanks to all of you.

  • I'm hoping she just forgot.  But still, yikes! Is she allowed to do anything d wise without the orders? I thought it was a standard of care sort of thing...can't be there or use it without.

With the language barrier, if I were the nurse, I might get a release of information signed so she can talk to endo office

  • She sent him home.  She didn't know how to use the pump, or anything.  A nurse at another school in our district told her he doesn't have to test, because his pump talks to his blood sugar.   :o  I told her I would help as much as I could.

  • When I first read this, I thought he was probably self-sufficient with his pump.  Thought he might just need some support with occasional lows.  5th grade is old enough.  Has anybody talked to the kid?

Without any orders, I don't think they can.

We have orders for insulin and glucagon....pump mentioned in dmmp

    Not sure.
Mom only speaks Spanish and the kid is selective mute.
