Diabetes and my heart issue

  • For those not on Facebook, or who I'm not friends with yet on Facebook:  I haven't felt well for quite some time.  As I look back, I can remember being exhausted much of the time as far back as a year ago.  Over the spring and summer I felt like I had slowed down a lot, and I just wrote it off as getting older.  I turned 59 last month. But I couldn't hike as far as usual, had trouble climbing the sand dunes, and had to rest more often when running around in the yard with my grandkids. Then in Sept I started getting short of breath, like I had to yawn all the time to get enough air. It also felt like someone was pressing down on my chest all the time.  And I would have to rest after doing simple stuff, like changing the sheets on the bed! My doc sent me for a heart stress test and blood work and chest X-ray. Everything looked normal. Then she sent me to a cardiologist, and he sent me for an echocardiogram, and respitory tests.  Again, everything looked normal.  So, they wanted to look at heart arteries and to do that I had to have a heart catherization this past Tuesday. They found one significantly blocked artery, so I now have a stent. I had to spend the night in the hospital and came home Wednesday morning. I feel better already!  I still have some tightness in my chest, but that could be a side effect of the blood thinners they put me on.   So...I'll be on the blood thinners forever, to prevent blood clots from forming around the stent, and to help prevent future heart attacks.

Here are a couple things I learned thru this fun adventure:

The cardiologist told me that recommendations have changed now, and they now recommend that all people with Diabetes take cholesterol meds, as a preventative measure.  I never took them before, but I am on them now.

The cardiologist also told me that people with Diabetes can have heart attacks and not even know it, due to nerve damage.  This scares the shit out of me.

I tell you these things not to scare you, but just so you all know. Might want to talk to your or your kids' endos.

I also learned that low-cholesterol eggs take like cardboard.  Possibly worse than cardboard.  I will be modifying my diet somewhat now......I eat pretty well now, no fried food, lots of veggies and fruit, rarely eat red meat.  But I do like salt, so that will be my biggest challenge.

And lastly, even though my cardiologist says the blocked artery is definately because of Diabetes, how can they be sure?  Maybe It would have happened if I didn't have D?   We DO have a higher risk of heart problems, and I also had high blood pressure, but how can they KNOW FOR SURE?

Oh...one more thing......I have to contact Dr. Faustman's lab and let them know this latest development.  My guess is they won't want me anymore for the Phase 2 BCG trial, but I'll let you know what they say. I want to wait til after my follow-up appointment at the cardiologists on Dec 23rd.

Oh...one more "one more thing".  LOL.  The heart cath was nowhere near as bad as I had built it up to be in my mind.  The worst parts were laying flat for about six hours afterwards, and the part where they pulled the sheath out of the artery and put pressure on my groin area for 20 minutes and I got sick to my stomach and almost passed out.  Other than those things it was not bad, and I did ok with my blood sugar.

You're one of my D heroes because of your positive attitude. I hate that you've had to experience this. (Can't even speak about Dr. Faustman's trial because I would be so deeply disappointed for your sake!)

Gonna run it by my father-in-law, who has been a nurse in a cath lab for-EV-er. I'm curious for his opinion re: diabetes & heart issues.

  • Love and hugs.
Giovanni just had an abnormal EKG and we immediately went to specialist but thank God all is well. But I do worry what damages are happening that we have no idea about.
Glad you are on the mend.

  • Sarah -  I'm curious to hear what your FIL has to say.

Leslie - so glad that everything is OK with G.  It IS scary to think about what can be happening to our bodies.  Hopefully, we will have a cure soon!

Thanks for the love and hugs everyone!
