Today was a great day. Thank you!
« on: March 24, 2016, 10:02:19 PM »
I'm just under 2 months into this "Parent of a type 1 kid" gig and its been intense. Trying to figure out MDI dose amounts, the body's reaction to certain foods (as they relate to blood sugar), and of course, the A1c.
Its like trying to balance on a seesaw, but you're the only one on it.

Well, today was a GREAT DAY! Its been a great two weeks, but it took me until now to realize it wasn't a fluke. HA! I FINALLY figured out the carb ratio (which isn't the same for all meals, go figure) and we finally stopped the multiple night lows (after 2 in one night, you can't help but get mad). I feel, dare I say, confident?! It's like trying to figure out a super complicated math problem, and finally having a eureka moment (only in this life the math problem changes every day, but at least I have the formula). I feel great. I feel like I'm finally swimming and not drowning.

You want to know what finally helped me "get it?". It was this forum. I stopped relying on the diabetes educator nurse that kept trying to fit my daughter into a script or some basic program. It wasn't working. Every time I talked to her it was like she wasn't even listening. So I started going rogue. Got on this forum and read all of your posts about issues you were having with lows, highs, etc. I read for days trying to listen to veteran advice you gave other members. IT WAS AWESOME. I took that advice and started playing around with the dosage. Started watching that CGM like a hawk. I finally got it. FINALLY!

So, THANKS!!  There is no way I could be feeling this great, and my kid's CGM look that smooth, if it wasn't for all of you.  ;)

xoxo,

Its like trying to balance on a seesaw, but you're the only one on it.

One of the best descriptions I've ever heard!

Kudos for following your mama-instincts and finding something that works to make you & your daughter's daily life better! The old posts are definitely a gold mine--but we also don't believe in making people dig for information, so don't be hesitant to ask a question even if it's probably been posted before.  ;)

(Our carb ratios are different at different meals, too. Because T1D isn't complicated enough, right?!  :D )

Congratulations!  It is sometimes hard to "go rogue", but with this disease it is a necessity.  As we have all learned, D is different for everyone.  That said, I have learned so much from the awesome people here.  While what works for one might not work for another, it is amazing to have this wealth of knowledge and support.

Truly awesome post. Our endo told us on the first visit..the most qualified person to care for your child with diabetes is you, and very soon it will be him.
Pretty scary at that point but it really is true. They have the degree on how the body and the disease is supposed to work, but we know how our child reacts because we see it daily.  Paying attention to that and figuring it out, then Adjusting  as they change and grow is tough, add to that the challenge of trying to turn over the reigns to the child and I'd add "during an earthquake" to your see-saw analogy.
